Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa founded this monastery in the 14th century and it belongs to the Gelugpa (yellow hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is a sub-monastery of Thiksey Gompa. The main feature of the Diskit Monastery is the 106-foot-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha located in the prayer hall of the Gompa.

How to reach Diskit Monastery

There are two ways to reach Diskit- one is via air through Leh and the other is by road from Leh-Manali highway or Srinagar highway.
By Road: You can reach Leh via Manali Leh highway from Manali or Srinagar highway if you are traveling from Srinagar. The route from Leh to Diskit passes through South Pullu (an army camp), to Khardung La, and goes down to North Pullu to Khardong village and then to Khalsar village and then divides into two parts. The left side goes to the Diskit and Hunder villages while the other part leads to Sumur and Panamik hamlets.
By Air: The nearby airport is in Leh which is connected to all major airports including New Delhi. Upon reaching Leh airport, you can book a cab to reach the hotel and then plan a two-day trip from Leh to Nubra where you will explore Diskit and Hunder villages.
