MuLbekh Monastery is a popular tourist attraction in Kargil located at a distance of 45km from it and 260 km from Leh. Known for its 30-foot-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, Mulbekh monastery consists of two gompas- Serdung Gompa of the Drukpa sect and the Rgaldan-se-Gompa of the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism.
Also known as Mulbekh Chamba, the monastery is perched on a crag located almost 656 feet above the road. The altitude of the Mulbekh monastery is about 11, 495 feet.
The monastery is believed to have been built 800 years ago. The 30-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha carved on a stone slab is overlooked by the Leh-Kargil highway. The monastery is decorated with wall paintings and is home to several precious relics.
June to September is the best time to visit Monastery between 7 AM to 11 AM.
While exploring Mulbekh Gompa, you can also see age-old edicts inscribed on a mountain in Kharosthi script near the Maitreya rock idol.
